What Is a Starter Interrupt Device?

A starter interrupt device blocks a vehicle’s next start after a payment warning — never while it is moving.

A starter interrupt device (sometimes called a payment-assurance device) prevents a financed vehicle from starting after the buyer has missed a payment and been warned.

How it works

It sits in-line with the vehicle wiring and, on command, blocks the next ignition. It cannot stop a moving car and typically includes an emergency start code. Payment resumes → the dealer restores it instantly.

Is it legal?

In most states, yes, with proper written disclosure and consent. See the state compliance guide. Learn more on the starter interrupt system page.
